About the Event
Over the next decade, up to 10 million more girls will be at risk of becoming child brides as a result of the pandemic. The risk of child marriage increases through school closures, economic insecurity, and interruptions in services. Negative outcomes associated with early marriage include poor health, teen pregnancy, lack of education and increased violence. COVID-19 makes the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) target of eliminating child marriage by 2030 further out of reach.
Panelists discuss the drivers of child marriage and gender-based violence (GBV), particularly in the context of COVID-19, as well as describe alternatives to traditional programmatic work as a means to overcome challenges presented by COVID-19. This webinar highlights existing resources and practical approaches that can be used to address child marriage and GBV. Speakers are:
- Takondwa Kaliwo, Programs Advisor, Girls Empowerment Network, Malawi
- Michele Lanham, Senior Technical Officer, FHI360 and Collective Action to Reduce Gender-Based Violence (CARE-GBV) project
