In 2018, the USAID-funded YouthPower Learning program sought to better understand the ways in which young people’s civic engagement can contribute to peacebuilding and the prevention or countering of violent extremism (PVE or CVE). YouthPower Learning awarded grants to four organizations to research youth-centered civic engagement and community development initiatives in these contexts.

Although the research topics varied, they all revealed some lessons for the application of a PYD approach for peacebuilding and countering violent extremism. Inversely, the PYD sector writ large can learn from the experiences of youth civic engagement highlighted in this research.

The purpose of this brief is to summarize the findings and implications from the four research grants. In addition, some of the cross-cutting themes are synthesized for policymakers and practitioners from the PYD and PVE/CVE or peacebuilding fields.
