About the Event

In June 2023, we delved into the dynamic world of youth entrepreneurship, focusing on the interactions between young entrepreneurs and government institutions. We were joined by:

  • Bongekile Filana, who is working on sustainability, innovation and driving digital skills initiatives with organizations like UNESCO and Youth Economic Alliance. Her work on digital skills has benefited and impacted more than 300 young people in South Africa, young women in particular
  • Fatiha Taban, a remarkable young woman who excels in data collection and entrepreneurship, will captivate us with her experiences of working alongside government institutions, navigating bureaucratic challenges, and successfully building thriving businesses in Uganda
  • Speakers who shared their personal journeys, shedding light on the hurdles they encountered and the innovative solutions they employed to overcome them

The following topics were covered during the webinar:

  • Challenges and opportunities faced by young entrepreneurs in Uganda, including limited access to finance, bureaucratic hurdles, market entry barriers, and existing government programs and initiatives supporting youth entrepreneurs
  • Unique opportunities fueled by technological advancements and sector growth
  • Effective strategies for navigating and engaging with government institutions including how to leverage policies and programs to create an enabling environment for youth entrepreneurs
  • Importance of sustainable business practices, showcasing real-world examples and how sustainability contributes to long-term success and positive impact, and
  • Skills development and support for young entrepreneurs including the role of training, mentorship, and networking opportunities

Presented by USAID's YouthPower 2: Learning and Evaluation Activity, the Business, Entrepreneurship, and Private Sector Engagement Community of Practice (BEPSE CoP) serves youth, practitioners in youth-serving organizations, and policymakers.
