Welcome!
International Youth Day on Aug. 11 was the perfect culmination of a busy summer. At the event celebrating this important day, our distinguished speakers called upon us to ensure that our inclusion efforts cut across all youth demographics and incorporate mental health and wellness considerations.
We know how much representation matters. This quarter, we are featuring resources and members of our Learning Network that are placing underrepresented groups and individuals at the forefront. Discover what we learned at our PYD roundtable, why you should not miss our upcoming mentor-mentee panel discussion, and how you can join women like Catherine Kimaren Mootian in amplifying the voices of female genital mutilation survivors.

International Youth Day 2022 Challenges Us to Embrace Intergenerational Solidarity
What was resoundingly clear this year on International Youth Day (IYD) is that we need to move together, with a single purpose, to achieve change. On Aug. 11, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), YouthPower2: Learning and Evaluation (YP2LE), and Youth Excel hosted a two-hour celebration titled, Intergenerational Solidarity: Inclusion, Protection, and Mental Well-Being. Drawing nearly 1,200 registrants, the event highlighted the importance of building strong foundations for intergenerational solidarity through inclusive safe spaces, supporting mental well-being, and addressing power differentials both head-on and via systems and policies. Mentorship Series Continues with Relationships Panel Discussion in September
Join us as we continue the YouthLead Mentorship Initiative Event Series with our fourth event on September 28 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. YouthLead is excited to have the Latin American Leadership Academy (LALA) join us for this panel discussion on the topic of Listening in Mentorship Relationships.
LALA is a non-profit institution that aims to develop a new generation of diverse, entrepreneurial, and ethical leaders who will serve the Latin American region. The LALA Ecosystem is a collection of programs and initiatives co-created with Alumni that focus on leadership journeys. One component of their Ecosystem is a Mentorship Program where LALumni are brought on as mentors.
During this session, attendees will listen to a dynamic panel discussion among LALA mentor-mentee pairs who have personal or professional experiences in mentorship and have identified potential areas to strengthen mentorship knowledge and practices. They will share listening techniques that they leverage to build a strong mentoring relationship. The session will include a Q and A section for direct engagement with the panelists. REGISTER NOW.

Save Our Sisters: AfyAfrika’s Founder Discusses her Personal Journey to Fight FGM
Content warning: This episode contains a discussion about female genital mutilation (FGM), gender-based violence, and domestic violence.
It is estimated that more than three million girls will be at risk of FGM this year alone. Catherine Kimaren Mootian joins The PYD Lab as not only a survivor of FGM, but as an advocate for its eradication through her organization, AfyAfrika. Catherine shares her own powerful story and how her project, Scars to Stars, is helping other survivors find their voice and feel seen.
“We need more global advocacy. We want these stories to be projected. [FGM] is a human rights violation,” Catherine says.
To hear the episode in its entirety and to get more details on how you can get involved in helping to eradicate FGM, visit youthpower.org/pydlab. The PYD Lab is also available on all major podcast platforms.
Participate in a Community of Practice!
YP2LE's Communities of Practice (CoPs) are spaces where youth and youth-serving practitioners can come together to share ideas, tools, and build and test practical resources to advance PYD through collaboration, dialogue, and collective learning. Literature Review Brief
YP2LE conducted a systematic review of the academic and grey literature to better understand youth’s health resilience in the context of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The systematic review activity was conducted from June 2021 to January 2022 and explored broadly how community resilience is defined, promising practices in community resilience programming, the extent to which shocks and stressors influence resilience and youth health behaviors, and how community resilience is being measured. Findings and recommendations for this review are based on the examination of 118 publications and sixteen key informant interviews (KIIs) with researchers, practitioners, and representatives from USAID’s Center for Resilience and USAID Missions, Bureaus, and Independent Offices (MBIOs).
Roundtable Proceedings Report
In March 2022, YP2LE held a roundtable discussion with subject matter experts (SMEs) in youth development, monitoring, evaluation, and research to gather information on newly developed measurement tools, indicators, recent learnings, and other advancements in PYD research and evaluation that will influence Toolkit updates. This report outlines the Roundtable activities, key learnings, themes, and recommendations generated during sessions.
